Performance requirements

Specify the outcome before specifying the finish.

Performance terms only become useful when the test method, target and end use are defined. Fabric pages now show indicative engineering targets for sourcing discussions; these are not presented as lab-certified results. Third-party testing/reports can be arranged or provided where applicable against the agreed test method and production specification.

Moisture management

Define whether the garment needs liquid transfer, spreading, absorption control or a combination. Evaluation should use the buyer’s required method and threshold.

Quick dry

Drying performance depends on construction, fibre, finish and test conditions. State the required method, conditioning and acceptance limit in the brief.

UV protection

UPF is a measured fabric property. Shade, stretch and construction can change results, so a tested value should be tied to the specific quality and condition.

Antimicrobial

Specify the organism, test method, required reduction and durability expectation. Treatment availability alone is not presented as a verified performance claim.

Anti-static

Define the application, test method and electrical-performance target. Construction and finishing route should be agreed before bulk.

Water repellency

Clarify whether the requirement is surface repellency, hydrostatic resistance or another measure. They are different properties and should not be used interchangeably.

Stretch & recovery

Specify extension direction, target elongation, recovery and test load where relevant. Stretch percentage without recovery data may not describe garment behaviour adequately.

Thermal management

Define the intended environment and whether insulation, air permeability, drying or heat transfer is the actual requirement before selecting the construction.

Fabric-level evidence

Indicative targets now sit alongside the catalogue.

Each active quality carries a working target profile for pilling, colour fastness, dimensional stability, UPF, drying and stretch recovery. These estimates help early sourcing conversations; final acceptance should be tied to the buyer’s required test method and report.

Testing support

Buyer-specific third-party testing can be arranged or supported through recognised laboratories such as SGS, NITRA, the Wool Research Institute and other suitable textile-testing laboratories, depending on the requirement.

Send the test target with the garment brief.

We can use it to shortlist an existing quality or define a development and testing route.
