Understanding GSM, Finished Width and Metres per Kg

How GSM and finished width combine to determine approximate linear yield, and why buyers should compare all three before costing knitted fabric.

GSM is only one part of yield

GSM expresses grams per square metre. Two fabrics with the same GSM can still produce different metres per kilogram when their finished widths differ.

Approximate yield

For an open-width fabric, approximate metres per kilogram can be estimated from GSM and finished width. This is a costing aid, not a replacement for approved bulk measurements, because finishing tolerances and usable width affect actual consumption.

Buyer checklist

When comparing qualities, record GSM, finished width, usable width where relevant, metres per kilogram, roll presentation and expected tolerances. Use the same basis when comparing supplier quotations.

Use this as sourcing guidance.

Final fabric suitability depends on the approved specification, processing route, garment construction and agreed test requirements.
