What to Include in a Fabric Development Brief

A concise checklist for turning a garment idea or benchmark fabric into a development brief a knitting and processing team can act on.

Define the end use

State the garment or product, target market, panel location and whether the benchmark is visual, functional or both. This prevents a mill from optimising the wrong feature.

Provide measurable targets

Include composition preference, GSM, finished width, stretch direction, hand, surface, colour, finish, target quantity, MOQ constraints and any required test methods or acceptance thresholds.

Separate targets from verified results

Development targets guide sampling; they are not production-lot test certificates. Agree the test method and acceptance threshold before bulk, then confirm the approved construction and production specification in writing.

Use this as sourcing guidance.

Final fabric suitability depends on the approved specification, processing route, garment construction and agreed test requirements.
